At the start of 2026, electric mobility continues to evolve rapidly. Rising registration figures, growing public interest, and new incentive programs are currently shaping the landscape. This overview summarizes some key developments related to electric cars, charging infrastructure, and market trends from the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n

New Record High: Over 2 Million Electric Cars in Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n

As of January 1, 2026, the number of registered electric vehicles in Germany exceeded 2 million for the first time\u20142,034,260, to be exact. Most electric cars are registered in North Rhine-Westphalia, followed by Bavaria and Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. 1<\/p>\n

A symbolic milestone: The two-millionth car delivered was the ID.3 compact car from Volkswagen. 2<\/p>\n

January 2026: Strong growth in Germany and the EU<\/p>\n

In January, a total of 154,230 new electric cars were registered in the European Union. This brought the market share of electric cars to 19.3%. 3<\/p>\n

Significant growth is also evident in Germany:<\/strong><\/p>\n

42,682 new registrations represent a 23.8% increase compared to the previous year. The market share stands at 22%. 4 This means Germany remains the largest market for electric cars in Europe. 5<\/p>\n

Positive trends were not limited to private customers: registrations of electric fleet vehicles also rose by 18% in January. 6<\/p>\n

Debate Over Purchase Incentives for Electric Cars<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key topic at the start of the year is the announced purchase incentive for electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The subsidies depend, among other things, on income, marital status, and other criteria, and range from \u20ac1,500 to \u20ac6,000. 7<\/p>\n

However, the measure has also drawn criticism. Experts cite concerns such as potential windfall effects, social injustice, and the inclusion of certain plug-in hybrids in the subsidy program. 8, 9<\/p>\n

February and March 2026: Growth Continues<\/strong><\/p>\n

The positive trend continued in February: 46,275 newly registered electric cars represent a 28.5% increase and a market share of 21.9%. 10<\/p>\n

Across the EU, over 158,000 new registrations were recorded in February. This corresponds to a 20.6% increase compared to the previous year. 11<\/p>\n

500-Million-Euro Program for Charging Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Federal Ministry of Transport announced another funding program for the expansion of charging infrastructure in and around multi-unit residential buildings. The total package amounts to up to 500 million euros and is aimed at:<\/p>\n

Homeowners\u2019 associations
\nSmall and medium-sized enterprises
\nPrivate owners of rental apartments, as well as housing associations and real estate companies with large housing portfolios
\nThe goal is to significantly improve access to charging stations and further expand the charging infrastructure. 12<\/p>\n

Nearly 200,000 Charging Stations<\/strong><\/p>\n

As of March 1, according to the Federal Network Agency\u2019s charging station registry, there were 147,935 standard charging points and 50,449 fast-charging points. This brings Germany closer to the 200,000 mark for public charging points. 13<\/p>\n

Price Trends for Electric Cars<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the AUTO 1 Group, prices for electric vehicles have risen by 2.9% so far, both month-over-month and year-over-year; in March, the index reached 100.8. However, prices are 1.7% lower compared to the same month last year. Despite short-term price increases, electric cars are thus becoming more affordable in the long term. 14<\/p>\n

Demand Continues to Rise<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overall, interest in electric cars continues to grow. According to a representative Forsa survey, 21% of respondents would prefer an electric car as their next vehicle; this places the electric car in second place on the scale, behind gasoline-powered cars, and represents a 4% increase compared to previous years. 15<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

The figures from the first quarter of 2026 show that e-mobility continues to develop steadily despite the weaker economic situation. Registration numbers and market share are rising steadily. At the same time, interest among private and business customers continues to grow.<\/p>\n
